sandy, thankfully. but still a lot of people without power. it is cold. that is the last thing they need right now is another storm moving in. we'll continue to follow that. >> tough times in that area. there was a high voter turnout across the country. >> that led to long lines in many places. sky fox captured these pictures from fredericksburg, virginia. it is a little bit dark but you can see it wrapping around the building there. this is around 5:00 yesterday evening. a line just snaking around the polling place but many of you told us there didn't seem to be enough voting stations, enough ballots and working equipment. it is an issue president obama addressed in his victory speech last night. >> whether you voted for the very first time or waited in line for a very long time, by the way, we have to fix that.

>> now, a lot of people experienced those long lines and you actually experienced long lines in early voting. >> early voting was ridiculous. a minimum three hours. i went on a couple of different days trying to early vote, three, four hours at all the locations that i went to. i ended up voting yesterday and it was fine yesterday. 15 minutes at my voting location. a lot of people went early in the morning and late in the afternoon, not in the middle of the day. >> we know there have been some problems with voting machines and things like that. they are also saying we had a record amount of turnout as well. we still have plenty ahead. we are continuing to follow all of your election coverage. fox 5 morning news continues right now. right now. while each of us will pursue our own individual dreams, we are an american family and we rise or fall together as one nation and as one people. one people. >> reporter: president obama offering words of hope and encouragement during his

victory speech last night in chicago. the scene here in the district, let's take a look. ke a look. >> look at that. a huge crowd gathered outside the white house and then just eruptioned into a frepsy when news outlets called the election for president obama. many were heard cheering four more years. -- a frenzy when news outlets called the election for president obama. the president won the popular vote. at last count, he had garnered more than 58 million votes while mitt romney has more than 56 million votes. >> we know it is the electoral college, not the popular vote that it really comes down to here. president obama has 303 electoral votes. mitt romney got 206. still outstanding are florida's 29 electoral votes. the vote count there, still too close to call. but that outcome will not have an impact on the end result here. we'll get to all of our

election results in just a minute but first, we're also keeping an eye on some possible nasty weather coming our way. >> tucker has been talking about it, telling us about some cold wind. >> rain, snow. >> maybe a little winter weather. just a little bit of it. >> it is almost wintertime. >> it is only early november. we don't traditionally have snow events in early november. those of you that might remember back to 1987, we had a veteran's day storm. >> i heard sue palka talking about that. >> it dropped about a foot of snow. but it won't be like that for today. this is all about the nor'easter. it is starting to press toward the area and bringing cloud cover in overnight and will bring us some rain showers later this morning and then this afternoon as some of the real cold air in the upper atmosphere kind of gets pushed down to the ground. we could see that rain, height rain transition over to a period of winter weather around here. it is some snow as things start

to wind down and the system starts to push off to the north and east. right now, a little bit of rain shower activity in southern maryland. not sure that is touching the ground. as you get further to the lower eastern shore, down down towards ocean city and salisbury, they are getting rain at this hour. we'll watch and see if that rain doesn't transition over to some snow later today. also want to mention, it will an very tight gradient with the storm. generally, as you get west of 95, you won't get much of anything. best chance for anything as far as any kind of accumulation will be more and east of baltimore, up towards philly, they have the best chance for it. it is cold enough for snow, not cold enough to stick. but certainly cold enough to fall. 42 your daytime high. that will be it. very, very chilly day. temperatures about 20 degrees below average. cold and cloudy. hard to believe it is early november. rain, snow likely. light accumulations possible.

majority felt president obama was more in touch with people like them. as results from ohio and very started to come in, jubilant supporters of the president rushed to the white house to celebrate the owe legislation. just a few hours later, the president addressed the nation. >> it doesn't matter who you are or where you come from or what you look like or where you live, it doesn't matter where you are black or white or hispanic or asian or native american or young or old or rich or poor, able, disabled, gay or straight, you can make it here in america. >> obama spoke in his hometown of chicago. he pledged to work with leaders of both parties to help the nation continue on the path to recovery. a different scene in boston as mitt romney stood before a disappointed crowd. his concession speech was brief and heartfelt as he

congratulated the president and ask all americans to put partisan bickering aside. >> this election is over but our principles endure. i believe that the principles upon which this nation was founded are the only sure guide for a resurgent economy and to a new greatness. >> reporter: running mate paul ryan returns to the house of representatives as the chairman of the budget committee. not clear what mitt romney will do after two unsuccessful runs at the presidency. congress needs to get to work right away on a number of issues that threaten to hit american pocketbooks. the other major story from election night, historic ballot questions in maryland, approved. voters said yes to question four, the dream act which allows children of illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at maryland colleges and universities. they said yes to question six which is same-sex marriage and

virginia democrat tim kaine won last night beating republican george allen. >> allen conceded the race late last night and for more on the races in virginia, we turn now to fox sherry ly live in arlington this morning. >> good morning. >> reporter: good morning. president obama's win in hotly contested virginia likely gave a boost to tim kaine. it was a hard fought victory over republican challenger george allen to take the

virginia senate seat. the race though neck and next up until the end. kaine, the former governor and democratic national committee share man won by a four-point margin over allen 52 to 48%. the win keeps the seat in democratic hands and helped democrats retain control of the senate. kaine supporter celebrate a victory in richmond last night after allen conceded the race. it is the second straight loss for allen who lost the senate seat after one term to jim web six years ago. now that the election is over, kaine says the hard work is about to begin. >> as hard as the 19-month campaign is, now is the hard work. it is time for all of us who love this commonwealth and country to come together on find common ground in our efforts to find solutions to our nation's common problems. >> reporter: kaine won with the strong support of young voters, minorities and those who are candidate themselves moderates. the virginia senate race here was one of the most expensive

senate races in the country. more than $80 million went into this race. the bulk of that came from outside spending most of which benefited allen in a losing effort. that is the latest here in arlington. back to you. >> thank you. democrats not only kept the virginia senate seat but also the one won in maryland. senator ben cardin won with 54% beating republican daniel bongino who got 27% and rob sobhani who came in third with 17% despite a well financed campaign. we've got plenty more ahead. first, we've got more election results. we'll be right back. ht back. 

welcome back. time now is 5:17. we were so focused on the election and now you have the big story leading into today. >> it won't be a major story. any time we are talking about the possibility of winter

weather in washington, that becomes front and center. this is not a major event. a the early in the year for it. we have the possibility of of a few snow showers in the forecast today. all right? >> all right. i see you trying to downplay it. >> one thing i can guarantee you, it is going to be cold this afternoon with highs only in the low 40s. you mix in the wind and out of the north and east and it will feel chilly. best chance for snow will be north and east. but what we're watching this is coastal storm. as it tracks off to the north and north and east, it looks like some of the bands of rain will be barbed into the washington area. we could see a few rain showers transition to some snow along the 95 and east corridor later this affect. all right. 41 right now in washington. no need to panic here. no need to run out and get toilet paper and milk. not going to be a major deal. it feels cold enough for winter weather. 37 in manassas and in culpeper. look the our storm system, starting to take shape.

it will be intensifying throughout the day today. you can see the rain showers now reaching the ground here. pretty good storm surge and beach erosion. unfortunately, more problems from the lower eastern shore right up into new jersey and new york as the system lifts north. as the storm develops later this afternoon, some of the rain showers will be thrown back towards the washington area along with enough cold air in the upper atmosphere here up into pennsylvania that we could see the rain transition over to some snow here. and with temperatures only about 40 or so, it is possible that we could see some of of the area get covered in a light -- maybe the grassy areas get a light accumulation here. off to the north and east, that is where the best chances are for accumulating snow. notice how we're on the western

edge of the storm here. here is the center of circulation. if you are west of 9 5,ic you will generally be deeing with just clouds. here we are at 9:00 tonight and futurecast suggesting that we are seeing that transition over to a little snow across the area and then the whole thing lifts off to the north and east during the morning tomorrow. so again, not going be for a major deal but any time you are talking about snowflakes flying in washington, particularly november, want to keep an eye to the sky later this afternoon. 42degrees. that is it for the daytime high. winds north here, 10 to 15. cold and cloudy, rain, perhaps some snow likely. up towards columbia, ellicott city, laurel, you've got the best chance of a the light covering there on the grassy areas. there is your accu-weather seven-day forecast. a little better tomorrow temperature-wise but it will feel awfully chilly with a pretty good breeze behind that

storm. a nice warm-up as we get into the weekend. let's do some traffic. julie, what are people doing, staying up late, celebrating? people going to bed? >> i think it is a mixed bag. i think it depends on who you voted for as to whether or not you are still sleeping or whether you are up celebrating. accident activity reported here at fort washington. watch out for fire and rescue units responding. all green to and from the wilson bridge. for those traveling southbound along 270, an easy commute coming in from hyattstown working your way out towards 121. volume increasing. 395 looking good in the main loon and express lanes headed north from landmark. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. raffic. voters in maryland spoke out in favor of re-electing president obama. >> they also weighed in on some

key ballot questions. fox 5's holly morris is live in national harbor with the result of some of those contentious issues. >> good morning. there were seven key questions that were on the ballot yesterday. perhaps none getting more attention than question seven itself dealing with the expansion of gambling and the building of a new casino here in prince george's county. question seven did pass and it is fair to say that the celebration of its passing took to the skies here at national harbor last night. fireworks were set off upon word that question seven would indeed pass. question seven alloud for the additional game tables at all maryland casinos and the building of a new casino most likely here at national harbor. it was relatively close. it only passed 52% for 4%. that same percentage is what happened with question six, legalizing gay marriage. 52% of marylanders voted for it, 48% against. you will recall that governor o'malley signed a gay marriage

bill into law back in march. but opponents collected enough signatures to force the issue to the ballot. but in the end, voters sided with the governor. >> maryland spoke out for the country because it is the people saying we support you and believe that you are like everybody else. you deserve the rights like everybody else. we thank everybody who voted for it and governor o'malley. >> the people of our state understand that our diversity is our strength, that we are all in this together and that every child's home should be protected equally under the law. and that is what they said tonight. even in the midst of an important national election. >> reporter: two other questions that were at issue, question four, the dream act, allowing qualifying illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at maryland universities and colleges also passed 5 #% to 42%.

question five dealing with congressional redistricting passed more widely. -- passed 58% to 42%. fox 5 morning news continues after the break. stay with us.

colorado and washington have become the first state to legalize recollect riggal marijuana and medical marijuana was legalized in massachusetts. but in oregon, the measure was turned down by voters. opponents say the legalization sets back drug reform in the

good morning. it is wednesday, november 7th, the day after the election. taking a live look at the white house. nice and quiet right now. a lot of people were celebrating out in front of this earlier this morning with the big announcement. celebrations outside there. there is the video of it. the place president obama and his family will call home for the next four years. it was a fight for the very end. president obama gave his victory speech around 1:30 this morning shortly after republican challenger mitt romney called him to concede. >> president obama has a roughly two million vote lead when looking at the popular vote and in the electoral college, president obama with 303 and mitt romney got 206. the vote count in florida still too close to call but that outcome will not impact the end result. >> a lot of us stayed up pretty late or some later than others to see exactly what would happen. >> i stayed up to 8:30 last

night. >> i went to bed at like 6:30. >> such are the lives we lead here. >> let's get right to the forecast. we have some things to talk about that. would be cold temperatures and the possibility of a little winter weather around here later this afternoon. 41 right now at reagan national. 37 at dulles. bwi marshall, 38 degrees. rep remember that coastal storm we've been talking about for what seems like days and days, it is starting to get its act together. clouds moving in overnight. you can seat bulk of energy here, the bulk of rain showers. that is the green and yellow off to the east. it will remain so today. the center of the storm will be about 200 miles offshore and far enough to the east that we'll be on the very western end of it. so the bottom line, we're in the going for see a whole lot of precipitation with this particular event and that is probably a good thing too. this many indications that the temperatures are going to be cold enough later this afternoon and tonight. what falls as rain during the course of the morning may transition over to a period of

republican john boehner said the election ways mandate for both parties to find common ground. >> thank you. long lines were a common sight at polling place as cross our area yesterday. >> here is a look at how the vote went. president obama won in the hard- fought battleground state of virginia. results came in later than expected because some people were still in line to vote when the polls closed. >> in maryland, a win for president obama as well which was expected according to exit polls. registered democrats outnumber republicans in the state 2-1. president obama won the district as well. the democratic presidential candidate has claimed victory in d.c. in every election since 1964. that is the first year district residents voted in a presidential election. now, former virginia governor, democrat tim kaine, has won the closely watched virginia senate race. george allen conceded last night. night.

misconduct in office. amendment six will make it so a councilmember convicted of a felony will automatically lose their seat wind -- and will be barred from holding that eat again. amendment seven does the same thing with regard to the mayor. a little post-election day trivia. >> president obama, who won in ohio in this year's election, it was a crucial state as you know. president kennedy was the last president elected out winning ohio. that was back in 1960. ♪

east. philadelphia, up fortunately, coastal areas of new jersey up toward new york city will bear the brunt of this storm. we are sort of on the western edge of t the storm gets to the north and east and we'll see some of of the bands of precipitation, first rain and eventually maybe some snow kind of pinwheel back towards the washington area. so just generally speaking here, 95 east has the best chance of any measurable rain and/or snow later today. if you are watching well out to the west, out towards front royal, out towards win chest are, i don't think you'll see much of anything today other than cloud cover and some very cold temperatures. as we get into the later afternoon periods, we could get some rain. the farther north and east, the better chance you have of seeing anything substantial and

i mean maybe a slushy inch across maryland. the farther north you get, the better chance you will see any action here so up towards columbia, laurel, up towards baltimore. best chance for any accumulating snow. i don't think we'll see anything other than wet roadways around here. cold, cloudy, rain, transitioning to snow. we might even see flake here in washington. light accumulation. that should say light underneath the bug there. possible north and east winds picking up out of the north here at 10 to 15. it will be a chilly day. tomorrow, breezy conditions behind the storm. 50 your daytime high and a nice warm-up as we get into the weekend. by early next week, by our observance of veterans day on monday, 65 degrees with some sunshine. that is a look at weather. let's do some traffic and get the latest from julie wright. >> good morning to you.

latest now. >> reporter: good morning. i would say that probably the biggest democrat to walk away with a victory from virginia was president barack obama. he has another four years. he won with more than 300 electoral votes including those here in virginia and after getting a concession call last night from republican mitt romney, the president says he wants to work with republicans. in virginia here, there were polling station as cross the state. this was a key to whether the president or mitt romney would win. in some places, voting didn'tened until hours later. state remained up in the air until well into the night. virginia was supposed to be one of the first to report but ended up to be one of last of the. elections officials chose to delay the reporting until everyone had voted.

when all was said and done being democrats took some of the stop races with president obama winning the hotly contested state and former governor tim kaine taking the senate seat. jim moran and gerry connolly, also democrats, retained their seats in the house. interestingly, the win by tim kaine in virginia keeps that seat in democratic hands. jim webb, a democrat, left the seat open. it is the second loss for george allen. he lost that seat to jim webb six years ago. so a big win for democrats in northern virginia. in the state of maryland, it proved to be the battleground state it always was. back to you. >> thank you. in maryland, democratic incumbent ben cardin easily defeated his challengers to
